American artists have always been drawn to Maine. Maine's light, the sea, and country living touch the aesthetic in all of us. This beautiful part of the world, minutes east of unspoiled mountains and minutes west of undisturbed beaches soothes the soul. Architecture in the Kennebunks reflects a delicate sense of proportion and balance, detail and patience, and harmony with setting.
Heartwood students can spend the morning painting at the school and visit the revitalized Kennebunk downtown during lunch...perhaps taking in the Brick Store Museum's latest exhibit or a tour of one of the historic homes on Summer Street. That same evening they can attend an opening, a play or a concert in Boston or Portland. These exhilarating options include The Museum of Fine Arts, The Gardner Museum, The Fogg Museum, The Portland Museum of Art and The Farnsworth Gallery. Equal to the cultural offerings readily available is the incredible richness of the local landscape. Everywhere you turn, there is a painting waiting for canvas or a river waiting to be explored. To study at Heartwood is to become a party of the natural beautiful and artistic tradition of Maine.
